Charles Darwin
1809-02-12 — 1882-04-19
"He looked at finches and saw four billion years of patient invention."
# Charles Darwin
He spent five years sailing the world on the HMS Beagle, took twenty more years to publish what he had concluded, and then On the Origin of Species changed every science on earth. Natural selection — the idea that life adapts through differential survival — is the organizing principle of modern biology, medicine, and ecology. Darwin was a meticulous observer, a prodigious correspondent, and a man who understood exactly how disruptive his idea was. He was buried in Westminster Abbey, near Newton.
